The Weekend Cometh

So...Our wireless was sort of freaking out Thursday night, hence the delay in postings.

A few quick things, we had the first environmental/energy building social on Wednesday at lunch. It was a pretty big success; six groups were represented and there was only one that nobody could say anything about (thought to be fair I represented SELF there). So it looks like we'll be having one more before I go and it will be a discussion about renewable energy projects that groups are working on (as possible collaboration possibilities) and how we can work to "green" the building. We're also having a happy hour get together next Wednesday for all the people who work at these organizations. It was dubbed an opportunity for summer interns to learn more about similar organizations (that whole informal networking thing) and a dating service for us too ;-).

On Thursday, I managed to get to most of a presentation on the UK and the G8 and climate change. The Secretary for Energy and the Environment was the main speaker; he was pretty good. Best quote? (regarding expectations of the upcoming G8 conference in Scotland) "There was an assumption that Blair was going to turn Bush on Kyoto through some sort of voodoo magic". I don't know what I think of Tony these days, I really do wish he would abandon his seemingly false impression that by not putting hard pressure on Bush, he is nurturing the special access/relationship he has. I guess at this point, I just wish he would make a stand - how can Bush ignore him? He's one of the US's most reliable allies. But I suppose that's the difference between my ideal world and the world of policy.

Simone showed up yesterday morning and Kim got in about 2am, so today will be the beginning of this whole "4th of July weekend spectacular"...ended up with less people than we expected, but I think it'll work out fine. Hope you all have a great weekend and holiday and catch you afterwards.
