Fear or not returning
Is the fear of not returning to school if I take a break sufficient reason to go now without a direction?
I confess that I'm a little concerned whether I'm letting my possible burnout with education cloud my thoughts of the immediate future to the detriment of the long-term future...

I don't think that going without direction is a wise choice. Consider the odds that the direction you select is a bad one and look at risk of investing the time/money for something that makes you miserable or a degree you don't finish/never use.
Burnout is the only thing that makes me have second thought about law school (well, burnout and not getting in). I combat my burnout issue by promising myself that I don't have to work my first year.
